Scotland September 2011
A short trip to remember for a very long time. I’d planned to take a run up to Scotland a couple of months ago to scout out some suitable locations to try & shoot the Aurora from if there were a significant flare from the Sun. As luck would have it 2 days before we were due to head up sunspot 1283 exploded & headed towards Earth. I was hoping that we’d be lucky to see a feint green band low on the horizon & couldn’t believe our luck with the show we eventually witnessed. Not many other people can claim to be watching the Aurora Borealis in a t-shirt at 10PM. It must have looked quite strange to a passer by to see myself & Lorraine Evans dancing, laughing & whooping in excitement & pleasure on a road in the pitch black in the middle of nowhere.

View from my tent at Sango Sands campsite in Durness, Scotland.
“Pillars” & “curtains” were evident with this display. I can’t believe my luck with what we were treated to. It would appear that I now have something to distract me from storms in the long winter months.
Prehistoric glacial valleys carve their way to the shore in many places leaving their mark .
The Aurora has kicked off & both myself & Lorraine are jumping around in excitement like mad people
Roads weave along side Lochs that seem to go on forever. I can’t remember driving for so long beside the same piece of water at times.
The temporary traffic lights mimic the colours of the overhead Aurora with it’s continual changing of red, amber & green.
Heavy cloud slowly moves down the mountain sides & start to fill up the valleys.
